Scouts BSA Geology Merit Badge Program (Blue Card) at the Herkimer Diamond Mines

Scouts BSA Geology Merit Weekend will be October 23rd to October 25th, 2020
Reservations due by 4:00pm on October 16th
Solely for Boy Scouts who need their blue card signed in order to receive their Geology Merit Badge. The Herkimer Diamond Mines will be conducting a Boy Scout Jamboree on October 23rd to October 25th. Cost is $29.00 per Boy Scout for the Saturday program. For any adult or sibling wishing to attend Saturday for mining only, an $10.00 per person mining fee will apply. Reservations are required for both the Program attendees and Mining only attendees. The actual Merit Badge program will be held on Saturday, October 24th.
Curriculum Will Include The Following Modules - (tentative – schedule subject to change)
Module #1 - Mining Experience
Module #2 - Paleontology / Gemology
Module #3 - Sustainability / Environmental Issues / Energy Sources
Module #4 - Earth Processes
Module #5 - Earth Materials / Hardness Scale / 3 Types of Rocks / Commercial Application
Module #6 - Water Conservation
All materials will be provided to Scouts for each module. Scouts will have the opportunity to take home the following items: all Diamonds found in the mines, all Fossils found in the mines or in the sluice, all Gemstones found in the sluice, and all jewelry and gift items made. Prizes will be awarded at the Awards Ceremony.
Food Options (Reservations Required)-
You are welcome to bring your own bag lunch and use our picnic areas. If you would like us to provide meals, we can offer the following:
Saturday Lunch - Cost is $9.00 per lunch (lunch includes: choice of hamburger or hot dog, potato chips, applesauce, cookie, and a beverage) to be served at the Herkimer Diamond KOA Pavilion.
Sunday Breakfast - Cost is $8.00 per breakfast (breakfast includes: pancake / waffle, sausage, coffee / hot chocolate) to be served at the Herkimer Diamond KOA Pavilion.
KOA ACCOMMODATIONS: If you are traveling in for the program and would like to make camping reservations, please call our KOA Kampground at 315.891.7355 for availability and pricing. Please mention code #BS2020 when booking at KOA Campgrounds to receive 10% discount off your cabin while the program is ongoing.
OPTIONAL EVENTS FOR THOSE STAYING AT OUR KOA KAMPGROUND:
Movies will be playing in the Cinema both Friday and Saturday night. On Friday we will have a flashlight candy hunt and on Saturday evening we will start a bonfire and sponsor a s'mores event at the fire pit.
CLOTHING: The Scouts will be outdoors for a majority of their time. Please be prepared with the appropriate clothing. Sneakers or closed-toed shoes are required.
GOGGLES: If Scouts have their own goggles please bring them with you. If not, goggles can be purchased for $2.50 each.
HAMMERS: Will be provided for the Scouts mining modules. You are also welcome to bring your own if you choose.
PLASTIC BAGS: We will provide small ziplock bags for your finds. Some prospectors bring buckets to carry larger rocks.
