Experience the Herkimer Mine
A gem of a destination with something for everyone.
Geology
Hidden in the rocks of Herkimer County, New York are one of nature’s most magnificent gemstones. The Herkimer Diamond Mines are the home to an abundance of double-terminated quartz crystals formed almost 500 million years ago. Their diamond-like geometrical shape closely resembles that of a true diamond, thus lending its name to the “Herkimer Diamond”.
Family Owned and Operated
The Scialdo family purchased the Herkimer Diamond KOA in 1979. It has remained a family owned and operated business for over 50 years. The property consists of the mines and the KOA resort. Situated on the West Canada Creek, the Diamond Mines KOA resort offers a variety of exciting prospects for accommodations and entertainment.
New and Improved
A devastating fire in October 2017 destroyed the historic barn that housed the Registration Center, Gem Store, Activity Center and Museum. In 2018, the mine began a new chapter in its history with the launch of the Miners’ Village, offering the chance to preserve some of the past and dream big for the future. These improvements have already started to serve the next generation of miners for years to come.
